Gum Treatment Aftercare — After Your Deep Cleaning
Your gums have been cleaned below the line so they can reattach — the next two weeks of gentle care decide how well they do.
First 24 hours
- Take it easy for the rest of the day; no strenuous activity
- Expect tenderness and minor bleeding spots — normal after deep cleaning
- Cold compress 10–15 minutes at a time if there's swelling
- Warm salt-water rinse in the evening, gently
- Soft, lukewarm foods; avoid spicy, crunchy and very hot
Days 2–7
- Brush twice daily with a soft brush — gently but thoroughly; skipping cleaning makes gums worse, not better
- Don't floss the treated areas until we give the all-clear at review
- Continue salt-water rinses after meals
- Teeth may feel temporarily sensitive as gums shrink back to healthy size — this settles
- Drink plenty of water; avoid straws and tobacco
Weeks 2+
- Resume the full home routine we set together, including flossing when cleared
- Attend the review — pocket re-measurement shows exactly how well you've healed
- Keep your maintenance-cleaning schedule; gum health is maintained, not just fixed
Call us promptly if you notice
- Bleeding that increases rather than settles after the first days
- Swelling or throbbing pain in any treated area
- Fever, or a bad taste that persists
